Maybe you are thinking about debtor's prison, which is outlawed.

As for a credit card debt, you can be sued. Usually they'll newly use a collection agency, ruin your credit, and thus, ruin your life for the subsequent 7-10 years.

What is credit? It's basically using someone else's money to buy something that you can't afford at the moment. You compensate interest for the privilege of borrowing that money. Now, if you borrow money and refuse to money them back, they ought to enjoy recourse to get that money, right? If someone borrowed money from you, would you forgive the loan if they want to not pay you fund?
