Rental motor holds!? Do all rental companies put a hold on credit cards when renting?

Do all rental companies put a hold on credit cards when renting? I tried Thrifty when I be out in LA and they where on earth going to put a $400 hold on my card, I cancelled it 'cuz I needed the money for the weekend. Please let me know if within are companies that don't have holds or at lowest possible less than $400 which seem ridiculus??

I judge enterprise put a $250 hold on my card last time I rented. But that be about a year ago.

I hear (not confirmed) that the hold amount is partly base on the value of the saloon and the length of the rental. In other words renting the sub compact for in the future will have a lower hold than renting a luxury sports car for a week.

I muse all rental saloon companies put a hold on a certain amount depending on how long you let somebody know them you want to rent the car for. They do it because if you don't return it when you are supposed to they can return with their hands on at least possible a partial amount of the overcharges. It's really only a honourable business practice if you put yourself in their position. I'm sure tons times people hold over extended their rental time. It's the old story of a few relatives making things worse for everyone.

Yes, they put a hold on the card for the amount of the car and the insurance if you thieve it out...and then will release that amount bad your card upon return and then will charge to your card the actual amount to be precise owed.

Never have that happen to me. I rent cars more or less three times a year. I would be more concerned about maxing out a card at 400 bucks. How could $400 crimp your weekend knowing that you are getting the money wager on? There is something you are not telling contained by your question. If you rent from Avis they are different than other rental car companies. They charge you the amount of the rental up front. So if your total cost for the rental for one week is $200.00 they charge you up front instead of charging you when you return the saloon like other sports car rental agencies.

Unlike Thrifty and others who only help yourself to an Authorization on your card and have you pay cheque for the rental upon return. I'm certain that most adjectives other rental car agencies do this besides Avis.

I went next to Hertz and they needed my credit card number to reserve the car, but no charges be going to be made until I picked the car up. My parents get caught in that mess beforehand. I don't blame you for canceling. I had impossible to tell apart problem with thrifty surrounded by Detroit. They put a hold on my amex card. The hold was from amex for hitting over the target. I still had the sports car but could not use the card anymore. Which sucked! It also depends on what card you use. Some companies will not cover any liability for payment you might accrue. The hold be probably a security deposit. it is bs, gas station s do matching thing when you use a debit card to buy gas, that cause me more than one problem with the edge, it is legal because the industry pays bad some crooked politicians
