Something where on earth you can get your benefits salaried into and set up Standing orders and Direct debit to pay your bills? If this is the suitcase every bank offer the facility of a Basic Bank account. Some are better than others. Banks similar to Halifax, Co-Op, Natwest offer debit cards but short the worry of going overdrawn. With these accounts nearby are no cheque or overdraft facilities. Off the top of my herald i can't remember which of these you can apply for online but i am almost positive you can do the Natwest one online and you would then simply need to whip your id into the branch and they interested your account in that and then (or if you didn't want to do it online a short time ago pop into your local branch). it is called the STEP portrayal.

One good item about Natwest is that their telephone call centres are within the UK so no speaking to someone over in India who doesn't take in what you are wanting ;)
