I can not relate you the exact date, but if I am not mistaken sometime in the 1960's. They were invented because they are a great convience to shoppers, merchants and lenders. To shoppers because it allows them to purchase produce without having the money vital for the purchase. To merchants because it allows them to sell things they would not otherwise be able to vend. To lenders because it is very profitable, very protitable.
