How is that lenders can access my credit profile without my consent? I know that this happens as I received a missive from a lender stating exactly what I owed on my mortgage and what my total credit card debt was.

Your mortgage is public record. ANybody can find out what you owe on your home by any access from a title company or from the county clerks office. As far as the credit cards, you can thank the free credit report imperative for that one, since credit reporting companies have to issue free reports to anyone that ask once a year, theyve come up beside ways to offset the cost, they market off info to anybody that have a "legit" company. They dont give confidential info close to social security # but they do transmit them balance info, and I've hear they can get credit score too. The mortgage information is public knowledge...much to bank dismay! Anyone can walk to the county clerk's department and pull your mortgage information as it is a business of public record. They can not verbs your credit profile without written sanction, but your credit card company may have sold your information...
