16 year out-of-date debt? England UK? So I signed up for a gym membership three months ago. It

So I signed up for a gym membership three months ago. It was a contractual costs of lb40 a month for 12 months. I paid the first month, but after the second and third, I stopped using the service as I did not have time. I have transferred the money I had in one hill account to another and had not bothered to translation the payment options for the gym. Hence the direct debit be cancelled for two months. Following those two months I received a letter from an 'ARC Credit control' company telling me that I would be taken to county court unless I compensated the full 12 months.

What is the law in the UK for recovering this from a 16/17 year mature? NO guarantor signed the contract.

Answers:    As a child or young person, you cannot generally be taken to court for debt. This is because you cannot be legally held to a contract you make when you are underneath 18. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. You can be held legally responsible for any debts you run up to buy things that you requirement like food, shelter or clothing.

If you are under 18, it is a criminal felony for anyone to send you material inviting you to borrow money or search out goods or services on credit or hire purchase. However, if you are over 14 but under 18, you can enter into a credit or hire purchase agreement if an grown acts as your guarantor.

I don't think they hold any way to take you to court for this.
